Post-production begins

We're back from Manchester now and about to start work on the post-production for the latest Biomation film. It was a successful week, with lots of hard work, creativity and great ideas from the young people involved. The film will show what it's like as a Deaf young person living at home - dealing with parents, siblings and the occasional pigeon!! For the time being here are a few photos, and we'll post more once the film has been finished.

The company's activities will provide benefit to groups of people in the UK with a common issue or challenge, by using animation and creative media to explore, inform and raise awareness of that issue or challenge.

Films made available on course at York University

We are just beginning post-production on our latest animation for Lime Trees, about Deaf young people's experiences of using medical services. We had a very successful week at Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People, working with a group of Deaf young people to come up with ideas for the film, then script, voice and animate it. Top 5 tips for communicating with Deaf young people

This is a short film made with a group of Deaf young people to help teachers and pupils to understand how best to communicate with them. It covers common mistakes which the young people found in school, and which make their lives more difficult and frustrating. Animation is used to get the information across in a fun way, and is intended to be watched and understood by hearing and non-hearing audiences.

Today has been really good. I have been recording about how arthritis attacks your body and slows you down. I was really excited when I heard about coming because I'd never done stuff like this before. My mum said she really liked the flip books and the rollers. I have met some new friends and have enjoyed bringing my cousin along.

Live Arts: Viruses

Virus project

The aim of the this project was to take a one hour long workshop into local schools to show how art can be used to explore and explain scientific concepts.

We consulted with research scientist Andrew Axon, Liver research group, Newcastle University to understand the mechanisms used by viruses to reproduce. Once we understood the principles, we reduced them down into a format we could take and explain to primary school children.

Each workshop lasted one hour and involved around 30 children. We needed to engage them before explaining the science, and did this by showing a computer animation of a virus attempting to take over a cell - but without explaining it to them first. We then asked the pupils to imagine what was happening. We then offered an analagous explanation of an alien (virus) taking over a factory (cell) in space (the body). Having fired their imagination they drew and cut out their own aliens to animate this story.

We then revealed that the story was in fact about how viruses attack healthy cells and hi-jack their reproductive mechanisms. Once they understood this they were able to make the link between viruses they encountered (i.e. chicken pox, the common cold, and verrucas) and how they worked inside the body. Even the reception class were able to grasp the general concept.

Using animation and story-telling, we were able to successfully explain a complex biomedical process clearly to young children in a way that was engaging and age-appropriate.

Today in Biomation we have been doing are final scene for the animated balloon race and are just about to start doing live filming and setting up the props and the scene set.We are also getting noises to add to the animated scenes when finised like :traffic,country,fire works and birds(woodpecker,blue tit.)In the morning we had been doing the logo for our TV show and this afternoon, we are focusing on the live action and script recording for the TV show. Today we also had four people working on sound effects for the animation. the photographer also came to get pics of us working. CHEEEESE!

Today is the day we officialy start the project. We already created a story board, characters and now we're working on the script and props. The whole thing is going to be about a balloon race with contestants. One of them does everything right and wins, but the other one does most of the procedures wrong and loses.

We've had a good start to this week - lots of ideas down on paper and enthusiasm for creating some cracking animation. Below are the results of some simple rollers we made as a warm up...

We did these by drawing one picture on the back of a flipbook piece of paper then we drew another picture again on the front.
We then rolled the front page up and then moved our pencil up and down on the piece of paper and voila!

Award for Aspergers Syndrome film

I have just got back to York from the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival awards at the Filmhouse, Edinburgh and I am delighted to say that the Biomation Aspergers Syndrome film was the winner of the animation category at the festival.

The competition received entries from across the world including America, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and Israel.

The Aspergers Syndrome film was commended for its use of animation to explore the social, scientific and emotional aspects of Aspergers Syndrome.

It was such an honour to see the film being shown on the big screen at the prestigious Filmhouse in Edinburgh alongside other award winning films.

The screening created huge interest about the film and luckily I was armed with DVDs to give to film professionals and clinicians invited to the ceremony. Many of them want to spread the word about the film and the Biomation project!

Due to the timing of the event it was virtually impossible for the young people, artists and staff from Lime Trees to attend the ceremony. However, on behalf of the Biomation project and the City of York Council I would like the staff and young people from the Lime Trees Child and Adolescent Unit to receive the award. Hopefully we can arrange a formal presentation of the award to Lime Trees and the young people involved in the project over the coming weeks.

One last thing…
The organisers of the Scottish Mental Health Arts & Film Festival are hoping to make the festival an international event in the future. They are are in talks with organisations to have events in places such as Vienna, Berlin and………. York! Watch this space…

Congratulations to everyone involved in making the film an award wining film and ensuring it gets the recognition it deserves.

NEWSFLASH! - AWARD NOMINATION FOR BIOMATION FILM!

The main film from the Aspergers Syndrome DVD has been nominated for a prestigious national award as part of The Scottish Mental Health Arts & Health Film Festival (SMHAFF).

The award ceremony is on 12th October and the film will be shown at the festival between 2nd October -19th October.

The SMHAFF is the largest festival of its kind and is becoming a major cultural event in Scotland.

“We intend to achieve social change by engaging the media, the public, and the arts community in a dialogue about mental health issues”

The multi-arts festival aims to engage audiences and tackle stigma by exploring the relationship between mental health and creativity, celebrating the artistic achievements of people with experience of mental health issues and promoting positive mental health and well being.

Update from Biomation world

Biomation is going from strength to strength. The Asperger project is now finished and was a resounding success. Thanks to all the artists and staff at Lime Trees for making it such a memorable project.

We are now busy putting the finishing touches to the Asperger DVD and will hopefully have this finished and the first with the first run of DVD's duplicated within the next couple of weeks.

We are also planning the next hospital project where we hope to exploring Epilepsy through animation, film and music technology. But we haven't finished!...

Still to come are the community and education projects aswell. Phew!...

New Year Update

Hello - just a quick update on where the project is. The celebration event for the Aspergers animations went very well just before Christmas. We have a few minor tweaks to make to the film, and then it will be upoaded here and DVDs will be posted out to the participants (though this may not be for a few weeks yet...). We should be able to get some photos up from the event too.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, and all the artists feel that it's a fantastic piece of work and that the group should be very proud of what they achieved.

Planning is now beginning for the next stage of Biomation...

1 week to go!

I thought I'd share some pictures from the workshops, showing the breadth of materials used from paper cut-outs, paint and sand to digital techniques. It's an exciting time for everyone as the results of everybodys hard work reveled in the animated film evolving. It's been something of a sprint, making sure we get to the finish line in time, but in those few weeks incredible stories have been shared, and friendships formed. This has been a true collaboration, with artistic and medical practitioners imparting their artistic knowledge, empowering young people to explore their experiences though the boundless power of animation.

The diabetes project films

Well here they are. After all the hard work and imagination, the films from the diabetes project are finally up on the blog and looking great. Add your comments to let us know what you think!

This the main film, which the whole group worked on. Many hours of story writing, medical consultation, animating and voiceover recording went into making this film.

For the following two films, having learnt and developed the techniques on 'Zargon' the group split in two and took their chance to make entirely their own films, without interference from the artists...

We asked the group to sit down in front of a webcam, and answer a few questions about their experiences of having diabetes and what to expect. We hope that these may be of use to young people with newly diagnosed diabetes. There are also some comments at the end about the Biomation project.

Just a quick note to thank all those that took part in the sessions over the last two weeks for all their hard work, ideas, imagination and commitment. Dan, Miles and myself are all really pleased and impressed with how well you worked. When they are put together with the sound, the animations you did will look brilliant. We will put them up here when they are done, though that may take some time. In the meantime, we've put up a few photos from the project.

Take a bunch of normal, lively kids, put them in a room with three whacky artists and shout, very loudly, "make a film about diabetes - now !" Every time when I've tried this before it's always fallen flat, but this time it really worked ! Okay, so I've never done this before, but then York
Hospital, as far as we are aware, has never hosted an animation project about diabetes with children before. But all those who took part did a great job, and worked really well. What a great company we have had ! The resulting films will combine educational material with a sense of humour and some zany additions. I really enjoyed working on the script with the young people, an dhelping them storyboard their ideas. I still can't believe I was forced into humiliating myself by riding a tiny red tricycle around the room, but the kids and the other artists thought it was wonderful, so who am I to argue ? Well done everybody, a fantastic piece of work. Thank you for
having me along.

The diabetes animation project is underway! So far we've had 3 sessions in which the group has come up with a load of ideas; worked out the stories they want to tell, and begun animating - which they've picked up and got the hang of brilliantly. We also had one of the doctors in to help make sure all the details in the stories are correct, and answer a few questions about Diabetes. It's all going really well so far.

Next Wednesday we'll find out how Zargon gets on in his journey to the Heart and to the Pancreas...

Half-term cartoon heaven!

Well it's finally begun! After many months of careful planning, it was great to get going with the BioMation half term workshops. I thoroughly enjoyed working with so many talented children, young people and artists. I had a ball making flipbooks with everybody and I can't wait to see them with the sound tracks everyone was creating with Dan. Watching the filmed flipbooks on the computer was a real buzz. It was cool to see so many familiar faces from Wednesday come back on Friday and do even more amazing animation.

I'm looking forward to seeing lots of you again when we start making animated films about diabetes. Keep posted - the animated flipbooks will appear on the blog in the next few days... can't wait!

Taster sessions going great

We had our second taster session today and the group seemed to really enjoy it again - we certainly did! There were loads of excellent creative writing, sound and animation ideas and after tomorrows session we'll start putting the audio and video together and uploading bits to the blog. Keep watching for lots of new short pieces in the next week. We've been really impressed by everyones enthusiasm and creativity so far - hopefully tomorrow will be just as productive!

Thanks to all of you who have confirmed a place on the taster sessions with us. If you haven't yet, please contact Moira Digby as soon as you can... A letter will be going out to those of you who have confirmed.

A reminder of the dates - Weds 30th, Thurs 31st May and Friday 1st June from 9.30-12.30 a.m at the hospital.

At the taster session you will get to try professional animation, digital sound/music and creative writing tools and techniques. We hope to show you the possibilities and give you hands-on experience of modern digital media production.

Following the taster session you can choose to join a longer project where you can develop your skills and produce a pro-quality piece. The project will run through June and July so if you're going away on holiday please let us know the dates at the taster session and we'll do our best to work around you!

First 'taster session' at the clinic

Well the first 'taster session' happened at the clinic yesterday - thanks to all those who took part. We set up a very simple hand-drawn animation and sound workshop, and while people were waiting they could do a bit of each. This was to give them a chance to see what the Half-term week sessions will be about.

We got some nice bits and pieces from it (though we had to fit in with appointments and so on) and below is a video of what we made on the day...
